INDONESIAN IDOL: Helena’s Irony

In the Indodol album, Helena sings ‘Irony’. Onstage she must swallowed the bittersweet irony of life, she was voted out when she was in her most ravishing performance. Helena sang to perfection, “Pilihlah Aku”, a Krisdayanti song—also the honorary judge replacing the going-to-Barcelona-for-God-knows-what Meuthia Kasim. She didn’t alter much of the way of singing but she sang it to the top notch. But, she was voted out while it was supposed to be Delon. Such irony.

And she truly took my breath away singing “Hanya Cinta yang Bisa” with her sweet caressing voice. She gave the song the way even Titi and Agnes never could. I like her interpretation better. It was a subdued yet lovely performance. And her dashingly beautiful look and confident accentuated her performance and made her the best of them all last night.

That way of singing, subdued and calm, yearning and longing, was the one thing, one missing thing, the one way of singing that I’m so longing for Joy to try but she never did. She kept on singing a slow beat song with coda worth of an entry in www.jejeritan.com I’m thinking to dedicate to the queen of screaming, Mariah Carey. Please, Joy, can’t you be like Fantasia Barrino who hypnotized me when she sang “Always in My Mind”. There are various ways to make a song beautiful, one of which is by singing with your heart and forget your technic and power. The way Helena did. I know you have good singing technic, power beyond measure, but can you, for once, for a change, sing with your heart and stab my heart with a dagger with your voice? The way Fantasia Barrino did.

And for the first time Joy sang a song that didn’t suit her at all. Who ever advised you for choosing “Kuakui”, eh, Joy? It was much too R&B for you to sing! You absolutely don’t have the groove to sing such song. You are Celine Dion type, stick with that. Don’t ever try to be Missy Elliot or even Beyonce! You’re not R&B material! Gosh, I was irritated and dissapointed with your choice of song. And I don’t get the judges who kept on praising you although it was so obviously wrong.

Nania pleased me in a way she growled little. Finally she followed my advice, huehue… But what was this with the coda? It fell out of place and it’s like singanus interuptus. Don’t do that again please. If you know your singing-time is limited, let go of every thing in the middle before the very end. Not like last night when you sang “Aku Wanita”.

And Nania did try to sing with her heart in “Mencintaimu”. An excellent vehicle to wear your heart on your sleeve and makes those who listened to the song weep. But gosh, how I wasn’t touched the moment she opened her mouth and sang. She started with mezzoforte for crying out loud! My God, Nania?! Was this your idea of singing a romantic song? Can’t you whisper? Can’t you make it pianissimo as if you truly whisper the words in your boyfriend’s ear that you love in a romantic night after a candle light dinner under the twinkling stars and crescent moon? Enggak geddit deh! I was turned off and didn’t expect much the rest of the song. Yawn, I‘m bored.

Now, Delon, the cute unbelievably lucky Delon. One thing I didn’t agree with Jay when he predicted that Delon was not at his best. Delon learned from his previous mistake and chose a medium tempo this time and he sang it with all his might, also the slow beat “Sekali ini saja”. If the result was mediocre compared to others, it was not because of Delon didn’t perform well, but it was his ability that limited his ways of singing. Delon is Indonesian ‘Jose Mari Chan’. You ABGs ever heard of him, didn’t you? Beautiful Girl? O, please say yes, don’t make me feel old every week deh. He’s a wedding singer for crying out loud, he would make a Metallica song into a corny loving song!

So, if Indra expected him to sing more eclectically, he was out of his mind. Indra should’ve asked Joy and Nania to sing with their heart and forget their technic and power. They got more talent and they could develop more. Don’t encourage these two grand finalists (my choice) to be to keep on singing the way they did the whole competition. That way, they can truly be the more accomplished pop star Indodol is looking for. Like Helena. Like the beautiful Helena.
